We all know how important it is to prepare for the future but when it comes to making a will this is something that many people put to one side. For many of us we simply don’t like thinking about our own mortality, or indeed feel this is only something we need to do when we are older.
However making a will is vital for those left behind. For those you wish to provide for or support after you’ve gone, whether this be your partner, children or other friends and relatives. Also from a practical viewpoint it sets out who is to take charge and deal with your estate and funeral arrangements. Having a will can prevent arguments and confusion at what will already be a very difficult situation for your loved ones left behind.
It is also important to plan for your future as you get older. Many of us now live to a ripe old age due to medical advances but getting older can provide its own challenges and restrictions. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to choose who you want to make decisions on your behalf should you become unable to do so. Having another person make decisions about your property and finances, health and welfare or both is extremely personal and so it is important that you are comfortable with the person or people chosen to help you. Without an LPA the court could appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf that you would not necessarily pick yourself.
