What is a Police Protection Order?
A Police Protection Order is a legal mechanism that empowers the police to intervene swiftly when a child is believed to be in immediate danger or at risk of significant harm. These orders are typically sought by the police when there are concerns regarding a child’s welfare, including instances of abuse, neglect or exploitation.
How does it work?
When the police identify a child who may be in immediate danger, they can apply to a senior officer for a Police Protection Order. Once granted, the order authorises the police to take necessary steps to protect the child.
The police have the authority to remove the child from their current environment and place them in a safe and secure location. This could be with a trusted family member, a foster family or a specialised care facility.
Why are Police Protection Orders essential?
In urgent situations where immediate action is necessary, Police Protection Orders play a vital role in safeguarding children. By granting the police the authority to intervene swiftly, these orders ensure that vulnerable children are protected from immediate harm and placed in a safe environment while investigations and necessary actions take place. Police Protection Orders are effective for up to 72 hours.
