O what a tangled web we weave, when we first practise to deceive!

The words of Sir Walter Scott in his poem Marmion ring particularly true for the inhabitants of St Albans, according to figures produced by the dating website: www.IllicitEncounters.com

IllicitEncounters produces an annual “infidelity index” based on the geographical location of the members using its website, and the newly announced index for 2018 places St Albans in second place in its national infidelity table. The website serves as a meeting place for married individuals who are looking to engage in an affair, boasting over 1.1 million members, and claims to be: the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity.

The website reveals that currently over 5,000 married people in St Albans are having an affair, and that the city has seen an unprecedented increase in these numbers over the last year – previously St Albans `languished` in 36th place in the league table. However, all is not lost for the married couples of Hertfordshire, as Watford is said to be the eighth most faithful town in Britain.

IllicitEncounters suggests that one of the reasons for the increase in infidelity locally could be the financial implications involved in divorce, fuelled in part by the high cost of housing in our area.

The infidelity index may well be a light-hearted way of promoting the IllicitEncounters website, but here at Bretherton Law we regularly see the sad consequences of marital affairs. Setting aside any arguments about the morals of having an affair, there are the implications for children and other family members should the affair become public. It’s hard for it not to, with social media. Friendships, social life, work and living arrangements may all be affected, and there can be complex financial consequences from a marital breakdown which lead to greatly altered lifestyles.

At Bretherton Law we have a respected and professional team of Family Law solicitors, who can give you sensible advice at this tricky time, guide you through the legal aspects of separation and divorce, and advise you on the best solutions for you and your family.
