In the case of Veluppillai v Veluppillai, Mr Justice Mostyn was met with a party who was similarly happy to say what he thinks. However, the manner by which the Judge and the Husband in this case went about making their views known is markedly different. The Judge accused the Husband’s conduct as “abusive” and “abysmal”. These adjectives do not seem unreasonable, given that the Husband had threatened to kill Mr Justice Mostyn and had attacked the wife and her counsel in the Court room. .. amongst other things.
The Judge made an Order in the Wife’s favour, but the main point of interest in this case was the Order concerning costs. As a result of his conduct, the Judge Ordered that the Husband pay all of the Wife’s costs of litigation, amounting to just under £150,000.
The Judge should be applauded for his robust dealing with the case, which is what we have now come to expect from him, and we are already looking forward to reading his next judgment!
